Staff praised for dedication, love and compassion by couple treated for COVID-19

UHNM staff have been praised for their dedication, love and compassion by husband and wife Pamela and Brian Turner after spending their first night at home after being discharged from hospital with coronavirus.

Brian, 72 and his 69-year-old wife spent eight and six days respectively at Royal Stoke University Hospital after contracting Covid-19 in the community.

Today Pamela, who is still suffering breathlessness and recovering from the infection, said: “I would like to thank all the staff, we are extremely grateful for everything they have done for us. From the doctors to the cleaners, everybody is working so hard and through it all still had the time to make us smile and give us a laugh. It was a release for us and I am sure it was release for them too.

“I was really emotional when they applauded us as we were leaving because we should have been applauding them. The dedication, love and compassion to us and everyone else in these difficult times was tremendous and we are so grateful.”

Married for 50 years, the couple, who have two daughters and six grandchildren, have always done everything together. They were able to speak to each other during their stay at the Royal Stoke by passing messages across the ward corridor with the nurses.

Pamela said: “I would like to urge people to abide by the rules and listen to what the Government is saying about staying safe and at home because I would not wish this on anyone. We have never been so ill and I know we both have been very very lucky.”
