UHNM teams receive more than 1,000 sets of scrubs

Teams at UHNM have now received more than 1,000 sets of scrubs as part of a special campaign. ‘Scrubs4Stoke’ was founded by former nurse and sewing enthusiast Laura McColll and has seen hundreds of people take up their sewing needles in the fight against Coronavirus. An immense effort has been made across Staffordshire, with people in the community sewing from home and local businesses donating fabrics. Many in the area have raised money for materials and a local hub has been set up to manage logistics.

Laura said: “The staff are the reason we keep sewing! We are getting lots of positive feedback that they really appreciate the comfy fit of the scrubs and also the cheerful patterns. We have delivered well in excess of one mile of fabric into the community and some of our larger hubs receive in excess of 500 items a day. These range from scrubs, wash bags, head bands, theatre caps, bereavement hearts and blankets and hats for the premature baby units. We would like to say a huge thank you to all of our supporters.”

A set of 20 hubs has been set up throughout the county. People sewing in the community deliver scrubs to their local hub by placing them in drop-boxes at the end of their drives and the hubs count and check the items before packaging them for collection and delivery. Hubs record each item, the person who has made them and then send the totals electronically to the main hub on collection day.

Collection runs are organised and made by the logistics team, who orchestrate scrub collections and getting fabric, patterns and thread to local sewing teams.
