Happy nurse Melanie makes people smile

A nurse has been thanked for making people smile. Melanie Bourne, who works on ward 218 at Royal Stoke, is known for her warm nature and kindness. Her sunny disposition and strong work ethic make both her patients and colleagues feel better and she even volunteers to work extra shifts. Melanie's hard work and dedication has been recognised with an Employee of the Month award.

Kate Hackett, Senior Nurse for Education and Workforce, said: "It's clear that Melanie has a reputation for making a point of thanking her colleagues and making people feel appreciated. She shows excellence in delivering quality patient care and always acknowledges both patient and colleague's needs. She takes the time to listen to patient's concerns and make sure they are dealt with, asks and checks with her colleagues if there are any other things needed to be done and will volunteer to help in any shape or form. She tries her hardest to be efficient and manages her time very well when dealing with patient care."

Melanie, from Norton, Stoke on Trent, began working as a nurse in 1985.

She said: "My mum was a district nurse, so right from a young age I have been surrounded by people who care for others. I love nursing and have never really considered doing anything else. It's very rewarding to help look after people and to be able to watch them get better. I'm so thrilled to receive this award, it's a really nice surprise and lovely to be recognised."

Naomi Duggan, Director of Communications, said: "Mel is someone who clearly appreciates everything that her colleagues do. She takes the time to thank other staff members and gives constructive feedback on how they deliver patient care on the ward. She is really a great model for us all to follow and the way she works demonstrates the power and effectiveness of good communication."
