The team on the AEC (Ambulatory Emergency Care) unit have been thanked for their professionalism and compassion. Claire Maguire normally works as an Assistant Practitioner on the Short Stay Unit at Royal Stoke, but due to personal circumstances was temporarily redeployed to work with the AEC team during the Coronavirus outbreak.

Claire said: “From the very first day in the clinic I was warmly welcomed by the staff and any anxiety I had about working in an unfamiliar area soon disappeared. What stood out to me is the professionalism and compassion of the staff, not only to patients but to their colleagues. They provide immense support to each other and their prioritisation of safety and efficiency is second-to- none. They have been adaptable to change in their admission criteria and have modified the area to ensure that they reduce the potential infection risk of Covid-19 and enhance patient flow around the hospital. In light of recent events it has never been more apparent to me just what the impact of good solid teamwork and effective communication has on patient experience and staff wellbeing. Every member of the team on AEC is respected for their individual contribution regardless of banding and professional responsibility.”

The AEC unit provides same-day emergency care to patients at Royal Stoke. The team includes consultants, GPs, registrars, advanced nurse practitioners, senior house officers, acute nurses, receptionists and administrative support.
