Infectious diseases

The infectious diseases service is based in Ward 117 at the Royal Stoke University Hospital. From here the team provide inpatient care for patients with all manner of community acquired infections, complications of chronic viral infections and travel related infections. The majority of patients are admitted from the hospital's emergency centre, but patients are also admitted from our outpatient services and directly from the community after referral from their GP.

Outpatient services are provided from Central Outpatients, and in conjunction with genitourinary medicine (for HIV services), respiratory medicine (for TB services) and gastroenterology (for Hepatitis C care). The infectious diseases team also provide an inpatient referral service throughout UHNM and physicians see patients regularly in other inpatient units for advice on infection related matters.

​The team are heavily involved in education of undergraduate medical and nursing students as well as postgraduate doctors. The two infectious disease physicians are also part of the acute medical team based in the emergency care centre.

General i​​nfectious disease clinic

This clinic is based in Central Outpatients and deals with referrals from GPs and other hospital doctors for the diagnosis and management of suspected and confirmed infections. Patients with Hepatitis C are also seen in these clinics and where appropriate treated in the nurse led Hepatitis C clinic in conjunction with patients seen in the gastroenterology service.

HIV cli​​nic

The HIV clinic works in partnership with genitourinary medicine. Patients are seen in the combined GUM/ID HIV clinic by the medical staff from both services. There are also close links with the paediatric and maternity services. The multidisciplinary nature of the HIV team allows for high quality HIV care and management of related sexual health, co-infection, family planning and obstetric issues. Inpatient care of all HIV related issues takes place in ward 117 with regular joint multidisciplinary ward rounds.

TB cl​​inic

The TB clinics are held in conjunction with the respiratory physicians, Dr Allen and Dr Lehm, as well as the clinical nurse specialist, Mrs Middleton. This service provides a diagnosis and treatment service for TB as well as screening for contacts of TB cases, new immigrants and asylum seekers.
