Royal Stoke consultant awarded accolade for contribution to orthodontics and dentistry
A leading orthodontist from University Hospitals of North Midlands has been awarded a Fellowship Ad Hominem from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh in recognition of her contribution to orthodontics and dentistry in general in the UK.
Dr Karen Juggins, who is a Consultant Orthodontist at Royal Stoke University Hospital and founder of the Keep Stoke Smiling campaign which encourages young people to look after their teeth and promote a great smile was presented with the prestigious award on Friday 14 March 2025.
A Fellowship Ad Hominem recognises a person's professional status and contributions to the field. The award is considered one of the College's highest honours.
In his citation Mr John Scholey, UHNM Clinical Lead for orthodontics, said: “Karen’s passion for patient education, particularly children and young adults undergoing orthodontic treatment, has been a driving force in her career.
“Her ability to transform a local project into a national movement, as she has done with Keep Stoke Smiling underscores her leadership and commitment to improving the oral health of young people across the country.”
He added: “On a more personal note, Karen is not only a colleague I hold in the highest regard but also a dear friend. She is one of the most personable and approachable individuals I know, able to connect with anyone, anywhere, and make them feel valued—a skill that has been invaluable in our hospital's interactions with both management and, of course, our anxious patients.”
Upon receipt of the award, Dr Juggins said: "It's a huge honour to be recognised by your peers. But this award is really a testament to our Stoke team’s collective dedication - the invaluable contributions of orthodontic therapists, nursing staff, laboratory technicians, secretarial and administrative support, all of whom have played a vital role in enhancing the dental health of our community.”
She added: “Together we strive for excellence and hope to make a lasting difference in patients' lives, and I'm delighted that this has been recognised nationally.”
The RCSEd's purpose is to promote high standards in surgical education, training, and clinical practice.
It is one of the world's oldest surgical colleges, with its history dating back to 1505.
