UHNM Critical Care Unit host Patient Experience Week

Staff working in Royal Stoke Critical Care Unit have been finding out more about how to improve and deliver great patient experience as part of a weeklong programme of events.

From physiotherapy to pet therapy and the importance of communication to addressing cultural and religious needs, the critical care team ran a week of displays and informative activities to enable staff to think about their patients and the holistic care they might need while in their care.

Drop-in sessions on delirium, patient meal tasting and end of life care were also run to give staff the opportunity to find out more about all aspects of care that are available for UHNM patients. 

Sandra Barrington, UHNM Critical Care Matron, said: “Patient experience week has been a great success. The feedback from staff and those delivering the training has been really positive.  Staff have loved the different topics that the week has covered and the mix of displays and drop-in teaching sessions. 

“The food tasting of the altered texture patient meals provoked a lot of discussion as they were surprised with the choice available and how tasty the food was.  The sessions delivered by our rehabilitation, palliative care and chaplaincy teams about delirium, end of life care, cultural and religious needs have also been well attended and found to be great learning opportunities by the staff.”
