UHNM Neurosurgeon receives CEO award
A Neurosurgeon from University Hospitals of North Midlands has received a trust award for the difference he has made to a patient’s life following multiple surgeries.
Rhian Doyle, 37, was diagnosed in April 2021 with chiari malformation, a condition where the lower part of the brain pushes down into the spinal canal. Rhian was put under the care of Neurosurgeon, Rupert Price immediately and required urgent surgery.
Rhian, from Telford, said: “Mr Price made sure I gained his trust from the first day I met him. Since that day he has got me through some very challenging times and some tough operations.
“I was terrified but he made sure I had his trust - neurosurgery is a very scary place and trust in a surgeon is paramount, which was especially important to me.”
Over the last 18 months Rhian has had issues with cerebrospinal fluid (CFS) leaks and infections, and has needed multiple VP shunt operations, however Rupert was there for Rhian every step of the way.
She added: “My worst fear each time I’ve been operated on was waking up and not being able to recognise or communicate with my family. I can’t thank Mr Price enough for always getting me back home safe to my family each and every time.
“He is an amazing person. I’d like to make sure he knows just how amazing he really is and the difference he has made to people, and the lives he has saved.”
Rupert, who has worked at Royal Stoke University Hospital for 19 years and is now retiring, has been recognised with a Trust CEO Award.
Ann-Marie Riley, UHNM Chief Nurse, said: “I am so happy to present Rupert with a CEO award for his care and committed towards Rhian and other patients, ensuring they feel supported during their treatment. To receive Rhian’s letter about how Rupert has helped her to get through some difficult times during her treatment is incredible.”
Rupert Price, Neurosurgeon, said: “I am really happy to receive this CEO award, it is great to be recognised for my work and it’s all thanks to Rhian for her nomination and really kind words.”
