Acute Medical Unit
Acute Medical Units, known as AMUs, were only created nationally in 1999 and have become one of the fastest growing specialities in hospitals. AMU accepts patients directly from GP's and from A&E, with as many as 30 per cent of patients discharged back to the care of their GP after being treated.
At University Hospitals we have a dedicated team of consultants, trainee doctors, nurses and allied healthcare professionals to ensure that patients are cared for in the right place at the right time. The team deal with the immediate and early treatment of adult patients with a variety of medical conditions who present in hospital as emergencies.
The Trust has a nationally recognised model that was very well received in a recent visit from the president of the Society of Acute Medicine. There are over 450 consultants who specialise in acute medicine across the UK working in 225 hospitals. University Hospitals of North Midlands has eight consultants specialising in acute medicine.
