Infection Prevention
Infection Prevention Information for Visitors
UHNM treats thousands of patients every year. We work hard to ensure that patients receive the very highest standard of healthcare and are committed to reducing the risk of infection. Although the risk of getting an infection whilst in hospital is low, careful attention to infection prevention is essential.
- If you have suffered with diarrhoea and/or vomiting, or have a cough, cold or flu, please stay away from the hospital until you have been free of symptoms for 48 hours. If in doubt call the ward for advice
- Use soap and water to wash your hands and alcohol rub before and after visiting. Alcohol rub is only effective on clean hands
- Alcohol rubs are available at the hospital entrances, wards and departments, also at patient bedspaces. This is to make it easier for visitors, staff and patients to clean their hands.
- Liquid soap and water: washing hands with soap and water removes germs and is best when hands feel or look dirty, after using the toilet or when there is diarrhoea or sickness bug.
- In some circumstances, if you are visiting someone who has an infection – or who is especially vulnerable to infection – a member of staff may ask you to wear a face mask and, in some cases, other personal protective equipment such as apron and gloves. It is important that you clean your hands after removal of personal protective equipment
- We may need to restrict visiting in certain areas from time to time to help protect our most vulnerable patients, or to prevent the spread of infections or illnesses. We appreciate your understanding in these circumstances.
- Follow any local infection prevention measures, as advised by staff and signage.
- We as staff don't mind being asked if we have cleaned our hands properly.
- Help keep the hospital clean by not bringing in lots of belongings that can clutter the area around beds. Please take away items that are not required.
- Do not touch any wounds, dressings or devices such as catheters or cannulas this could introduce bacteria (bugs).
- Please do not sit on the patient beds, chairs are available whilst visiting.
- Please do not share items with other patients this includes newspapers, toiletries, and food.
- Do not use the handwash sinks to dispose of drinks.
- Report any problems, such as litter or spillages to ward staff. Our ward managers and matrons are responsible for making sure wards are clean and hygienic. If you want to talk to the Matron responsible for the area you are being treated in or visiting, ask a member of staff.
