Neurosurgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders which affect any portion of the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and extra-cranial cerebrovascular system.
A dedicated team of specialist consultants and clinical nurse specialists work at Royal Stoke Hospital. They treat a range of conditions including head injuries and brain tumours and they provide neurovascular surgery.
Ward 228 is a 32-bed ward which includes eight highly monitored beds. Patients are managed by the multidisciplinary team for complex and routine surgery, as well as specialized rehabilitation.
The ward links closely with the major trauma service and the team have close links with other local and regional rehabilitation centres.
There is also a team of six spinal consultants who specialise in the management and treatment of spinal conditions and injuries. Patients with traumatic spinal problems may be admitted to one of our trauma wards (ward 226, 227 or 228).
Patients undergoing routine or complex elective spinal surgery will be admitted to either Ward 231 or Ward 228.
