Abscess pus (minimum 1ml) Abscess swab

Turnaround Time: 2-5 days

Gram stain and culture for common pathogens

Collection containers:

Sterile plain container (pus),

Amies with charcoal (swabs)

Special instructions - NB for all microbiology requests, relevant clinical data and details of recent or current antimicrobial treatment should be provided: Collect sample before antimicrobial therapy where possible.

Specimen transport: If processing is delayed, refrigeration is preferable to storage at ambient temperature unless Neisseria gonorrhoeae suspected – store at ambient temperature
