Background:
Tumour marker for monitoring of colorectal adenocarcinoma
CEA is only of value for treatment monitoring of established colorectal cancer. Elevations may occur with liver disease, IBD, pancreatitis, emphysema, in smokers, as well as any advanced adenocarcinoma.
CEA is almost never elevated in early malignancy and should NOT be used for screening or diagnosis.
