Background:
Investigation of patients with gastrointestinal symptoms suggestive of a neuroendocrine tumour (NET) or screening for multiple endocrine neoplasia type I.
Includes:
- Gastrin
- Glucagon
- Pancreatic polypeptide
- Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide
- Somatostatin
- Chromogranin A and B
Sampling requirements
Patient preparation
- Complete overnight fast.
- For further information please read our fasting guidelines.
- H2 receptor antagonists including ranitidine, cimetidine, famotidine, nizatidine should be stopped for 72 hours prior to testing.
- PPIs including omeprazole, lansoprazole and pantoprazole should be stopped for 2 weeks prior.
Specimen requirements
- 2 x EDTA sample sent to the laboratory on ice within 15 minutes of collection.
Interpretation
Provided on report by referral laboratory.
