Hyperammonaemia investigations

About This Test

Department: Biochemistry

Requirement:

  • 2 x Lithium heparin bottles (green top) (send one sample on ice)
  • 1 x Fluoride oxalate (grey top)
  • Urine sample (white top universal)

Background:

Appropriate tests include:

  • ammonia, urea and electrolytes, liver function tests and amino acids
  • urine organic and amino acids and orotic acid
  • lactate and glucose measurement

Elevated ammonia levels should always be confirmed with a repeat specimen.
