Fixed Cell assay is used as a first line test, this has a PPV of approx 100% and NPV of 99.2% in new patients. should the result be negative despite a patient clinically still showing a high suspicion of autoimmune encephalitis, clinicians are encouraged to contact the Oxford Diagnostic Immunology laboratory to request a Live cell assay on the sample.
