Background:
CSF protein may be elevated by increased permeability of the blood brain barrier (Meningitis/Guillian-Barre) or due to reduced flow of spinal CSF (disc prolapse/abscess/tumour)
CSF protein can be falsely elevated in the presence of RBCs from subarachnoid haemorrhage or traumatic LP.

Results outside the reference range do not necessarily indicate disease. Similarly, results within the reference range do not preclude abnormality. Please contact the Duty Biochemist for discussion of individual patient results.
