Background:
Investigation of thyroid dysfunction
Please indicate if patient is currently being treated for thyroid dysfunction (e.g. thyroxine/carbimazole/thyroidectomy) in order to aid interpretation.
Samples will not be analysed if previous analysis performed within 6 weeks. If there is a specific clinical reason for analysis within this timeframe, please state this on the request card
In patients without known thyroid disease (diagnosis), thyroid screening requires measurement of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) only. If TSH concentration is abnormal, then free T4 analysis will automatically follow.
In patients with known thyroid disease (monitoring), TSH and free T4 concentration will be measured.
For patients with unusual patterns of thyroid results, it is possible to refer samples for thyroid interference studies. Please contact the Duty Biochemist to discuss referral.
