The Sleep Service

The sleep service at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM) was one of the first in the UK and was established in 1976 and a clinical service has been operational since 1983 providing a comprehensive service for the local population as well as being a tertiary referral centre for Wolverhampton, Shropshire, South Manchester and parts of Derbyshire and Cheshire. Its service quality and knowledge base is recognised both nationally and internationally.

We provide clinics at both Royal Stoke Hospital and County Hospital.

The majority of our referrals are related to sleep disordered breathing but even if you have symptoms of other sleep problems it is standard practice that you would have to be screened for sleep apnoea first before being considered for other tests or treatments.

We have over 11700 patients on CPAP in the community and establish over 1000 patients per year onto treatment. We offer regular clinical review and maintenance of equipment.

We also manage patients with non-respiratory sleep disorders.

We are now able to provide telephone consultations & reviews where possible to avoid unnecessary hospital visits.

Please DO NOT walk-in to the Department without a pre-arranged appointment.

Please be aware that we are only able to provide advice and appointments for patient that have been referred to the Sleep Unit by a medical practitioner. We regret that we cannot offer advice to people who are not current patients of the service.

If you have a sleep problem and would like to speak to someone about it, please ask your GP to refer you to the service.

If you suffer from Insomnia, please speak to your G.P regarding Cognitive Behavioural Therapy as we are unable to take referrals for this sleep disorder at present.
