Landscape and Ecology

The team is committed to developing a ‘landscape-led’ scheme with a particular emphasis on creating spaces that serve the wider community. Over 30% of the site will be multi-functional open space. New green spaces will integrate storm water drainage requirements with the provision of an ecological/ amenity area, enhancing
the area’s biodiversity through the design. The site will provide new play areas, open space and facilities. A play area is proposed at the northern apex of the site and a series of green squares will provide character and informal neighbourhood spaces. The proposals have a particular emphasis on the integration of green streets, street trees, swales and bioretention areas within the development. A series of green banks will be a distinctive part of the site – including street trees, swales and space for seating and social interaction.

The landscape proposals will retain and enhance the existing habitat, including the grouping of pine trees to the southwest of the site. Species used throughout will be relevant to the local landscape, and a diverse mix
will be specified to reduce potential issues with pests, diseases, and climate change. The proposed landscaping will also support the Biodiversity Net Gain process by introducing higher quality habitats.

The drainage strategy incorporates Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS).

The strategy includes swales, attenuation basins, bioretention features, tree pits and permeable paving across the site. Surface water discharge to the existing Severn Trent Sewer will be restricted to the greenfield runoff rates, as per the Staffordshire County Council requirements. This improves the existing brownfield conditions and where possible provides a reduction in flood risk.
